KCD Porto 2024!
Bit late for this blog post, since things got busy! It’s been almost a couple of months ago since I went to Porto for the KCD Porto edition! It’s actually my second time presenting at a KCD conference (see KCD São Paulo) but the first time doing it in person.
The talk
The talk was about (as you should be able to guess by now!) CI/CD Observability! Similar setup, me and Gio talking about stuff we love doing and pitching about. This time was actually the first time we had some more stuff to share around the progress of the SIG in OTel community. Was also the first time we demoed our new system, CI/CD Observability for GitHub Actions since previously we only demoed cases for Drone CI. On a little bit of more technical tone, it was rewarding to be able to see that changing vendors doesn’t introduce must hustle and that it was basically bit more than a week’s work (nicely and mostly done by Gio) to actually demonstrate the same for the new system, extracting all of the same metrics and traces. And this is in the end of the day the power of OpenTelemetry and the OpenTelemetry Collector!
Once more, we got people excited as we got lots of questions and interest from people that face the same problems in their day to day work.
not the best picture in the world, but travel bags do this!
The conference experience
The conference took place at The Porto Customshouse Congress Centre is a convention centre and former-customshouse situated in the civil parish in Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória, in the northern Portuguese municipality of Porto. It was an awesome venue, old-school and really well-maintained. Couldn’t be a better place for a community event. The organizers were friendly and really dedicated to making the KCD experience unforgettable. Kudos to all involved. About the talks, there were many talks that were insightful and got to check how other teams and companies deal with every day problems.
One of the best talks I attended was “Gitlab Runners at “scale as a service””, by Luis Serra. It was a 100% match to what we do in Grafana Labs but with GitHub. It was interesting to see that we are all on the same boat and that we all try to solve similar issues. Nicely delivered and got to ask a few questions and exchange ideas with Luis.
Porto and rest of my experience in Portugal
After spending 4 amazing days in Porto, it was about time that we went to amazing Lisbon for another couple of days. We went to watch Worakls performing live, with it being a great experience. He creates great music for all tastes, and is full of energy. Definitely recommend to catch one of his shows if he is somewhere near you!
After Lisbon, it was about time I went surfing! And what is a better destination than Ericeira, the surfing mecca of Europe?
This place was all about surfing, having good coffee and good food. There isn’t anything better to ask for if you love these things (who doesn’t love good coffee and good food? :) ). The surfing experience there was a little bit tough though, since it’s meant to be for really experienced surfers and I am still on my way to getting there. I hope next time I am more prepared to ride these waves like a pro!
